Puzzle - 10 Last time I had sent this puzzle Two bicyclists start twenty miles apart and head toward each other, each going at a steady rate of 10 m.p.h. At the same time, a fly that travels at a steady 15 m.p.h. starts from the front wheel of the southbound bicycle and flies to the front wheel of the northbound one, then turns around and flies to the front wheel of the southbound one again, and continues in this manner till he is crushed between the two front wheels. Question: what total distance did the fly cover? There are two ways in solving this puzzle. I had indicated in my last e-mail as to how would a mathematician solve this puzzle and wanted to know the other method, which does not require any mathematics. Bicyclists will meet after one hour as both of them would have traveled 10 miles each totaling 20 miles. The speed of the fly is 15 miles per hour. In that time it would cover 15 miles. The world cup football has just ended. In all 64 matches were played. I always thought 63 (48 in league and 15 at knock out stage) matches ought to have been played to pick up a winner. I could not understand about the 64th match. A friend of mine informed me that one extra match is being played to pick a team for 3rd and 4th place. He just asked me if there were 100 teams participating in a knockout tournament then how many matches would be played. I am in a fix. Can you help me? |
