Book - 17

The last week, I read the book 'Eats, shoots and leaves'.The book says, 'So if the book doesn't instruct about punctuation, what does it do? well, you know those self-help books that give you permission to love yourself? This one gives you permission to love punctuation.'

It is a book about punctuation written in a different style. It has several examples, history, and sometimes too many details that might interest an English professor; it is not written in the style of a text book. If you don't like reading a text book then this is the book for you.

I have come across other books too; almost all of them written in text book style.
1. The Art of Non-fiction by Ayn Rand
2. Who cares about english usage by David Crystal
3. The Elements of Legal Style by Bryan A Garner
4. The new york Public Library: Writers Guides to Style and Usage. (It
is too detailed one, perhaps good for editors.)
5. Collins Word power: Punctuation
6. The element of Style by William Strunk and White. ( It is said to be
classic and every book refers to it.)
7. The Plain English Guide by Martin Cutts.

If you ask me to recommend one book then it would be a difficult selection however I would stick with 'The plain English guide' by Martin Cutts. It is published by Oxford and now a paperback edition is also available. It is in text book style and I must confess my weakness; it is for textbook style.
