Book - 16
I am on
a
vacation and wake up
at
4
am, get ready for golf, to tee off at 5:15 am and
this is what I did today. Alas, on the fourth hole, rains caught us and
golf had to be abandoned. I came home, sat in the veranda with music
on, rains drizzling and
a
light cool breeze, excellent weather and
my wife being away, no nagging from her side. What life; why doesn't it
happen all the time.
The book is a
story of three mechanical engineering students, their life at IIT (Delhi),
love affair with
the departmental heads daughter and the death of
her brother for
not making
it to IIT, all churned up. It is written in simple language
(a quality lacked by many) and has flow that engulfs you. It reminded me a
lot about
my son
and
his four years at IIT Kanpur, the points that
he
used to make and the expectations of the parents including ours. The
story revolves around
three students: Hari(the one who is writing it), Alok, and Ryan. In
these three I could see
my son's
friends
CHATANKI in Alok;
my son and
his friend
Avijit together in Ryan,
who thinks squash is the best game ever invented. Ryan also says many
things that
my son used to say,
'Grades are nothing but mugging power; the system has to change'. I am sure this book will do well not because of the IIT mania that we have, or the price of the book (it moderately priced at Rs. 95) but for the way it is written. It reminds all of us when we were students. In these three, I can see part of myself, my other friends in others and is easy to relate with. |
